New York State’s historic Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) in 2014 set forth a series of ambitious goals for our state’s clean and renewable future. Amongst the most pronounced goals are a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 and at least 50 percent clean and renewable energy.
New York is already amongst the national leaders in energy efficiency: The Empire State ranks second – behind only Rhode Island – because of our reliance on mass transportation. Perhaps more encouraging is that New York generates nearly 30 percent of its energy from clean and renewable sources and is well on its way to 50 percent clean and renewable energy by 2030 if trends continue.
Less known to New York residents is their access to the historic NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery Program.
The NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery Program launched in 2014 to help New York homeowners reap the full benefits of residential solar ownership. If a New York homeowner qualifies for NY-Sun they will see an immediate reduction in their utility bill with no out-of-pocket cost and savings guaranteed by New York State.
Solar ownership is oftentimes seen as complicated and expensive. We put that myth to bed by helping Long Island homeowners learn if they are a good candidate for the program. What constitutes a good candidate for the program?
- A southern-facing roof in good condition: Solar panels best function on southern-facing roofs in good condition – typically 15 years or less.
- No significant shading issues: Solar systems approved through the NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery program must function at a minimum of 80 percent efficiency to be approved. Properties with significant shading issues are not traditionally the best fit.
- A working taxpayer or a taxable pension
Less than 25 percent of New York homeowners will qualify. Learn more about NY-Sun and find out if your home is a good candidate to benefit from New York taxpayer incentives to own a solar system:
